What is Law New?
Law new is a newspaper with information about the legal system. It’s published every week in the consolidated city and county of New York.
court stamp: A raised seal, press or mark that shows the name of the judicial district on papers filed in court. For example, it might say N=New York (Manhattan), K=Kings (Brooklyn) or X=Richmond (Staten Island). Also known as a seal impression, embossed seal or judicial stamp.
docket number: A unique group of numbers and letters that identifies a case in criminal or civil court. The first two numbers show the year, a letter* indicates the county and the last six numbers indicate the specific case.
custody: The legal or physical control of a person or thing. See also child custody.
implied warranty of habitability: A rule saying that landlords must keep rental units fit for people to live in.
habeas corpus: The process used to bring a person before a Judge to decide if they are being held against the law.
