What is Entertaiment?
As the Fall 2011 issue of T E News begins, a big question needs to be answered: What is Entertaiment?
In its broadest definition, entertainment is any activity that provides amusement, diversion or pleasure. It offers a break from everyday routines and allows people to forget about mundane or stressful events. Entertainment can include watching movies, going to concerts, playing games, attending social gatherings, exercising, engaging in hobbies or reading books. Children’s play is also considered a form of entertainment, since it teaches them to mimic adult activities (such as watching performers on television); prepares them for responsibilities, such as raising pets and playing with dolls; and develops social skills (by participating in group games). The etymology of the word entertains: inter means “inside” and tenere means to hold inside.
