New York Daily News
The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 and based in the city of New York. It is famous for its large headlines and photographs, short articles, and liberal bias. The Daily News is one of the most widely circulated newspapers in the United States and has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes. It is currently owned by tronc, the publishing operations of the former Tribune Company.
The newspaper was started by Joseph Medill Patterson and Robert R. McCormick, members of the family that operated the Chicago Tribune. It was the first U.S. daily printed in tabloid format and reached its peak circulation of 2.4 million copies a day in 1946. The Daily News also has a television station and radio station, both of which are located in the historic art deco New York Times Building at 220 East 42nd Street (the same structure that served as the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films).
Since its inception, the Daily News has exhibited a strong liberal to progressive bias. This is reflected in its editorial content, but also in the paper’s extensive coverage of social and economic justice issues as well as its strong anti-racist and pro-immigrant positions. The newspaper is known for its competition with the New York Post and its occasionally sensationalist journalism, but is recognized in the industry for the quality of its contributors (past and present include Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill, Chris Allbritton, William Reel, Mike Lupica, Juan Gonzalez, and Jami Bernard), its solid coverage of the city and its boroughs, and its letters section that allows readers to respond to other letter writers, called Voicers.
In recent years, the New York Daily News has struggled to maintain its profitability as advertising revenue has declined. The paper has cut jobs and outsourced its printing plant to try to save money. It has also been accused of bias and inaccurate reporting in a number of cases.
The paper’s current owner, the hedge fund Alden Global Capital, has accelerated the pace of changes at the Daily News and other Tribune Publishing-owned newspapers. In the last year, the Daily News has enacted layoffs and buyouts, outsourced its printing, and reduced the size of its staff. In response, a union representing the Daily News staff has launched a campaign to put pressure on the company to invest more in the newspaper. Actor Alec Baldwin has endorsed the effort.
