The Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper. It is primarily published in New York City and is known for sensational headlines and local news coverage, but it also includes celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, and sports sections. The paper’s editorial content often reflects a liberal perspective.

The first Daily News was printed in 1919 as a rival to the more conservative New York Post. The paper quickly became one of the nation’s largest newspapers, with a circulation in the millions at its peak. The News also maintained a number of other media outlets, including radio and television stations, and a syndicated columnists.

In the late 20th century, the News lost ground to the more sensational rival, the New York Post, but continued to operate as a profitable business. During this time, the newspaper acquired several other media assets, such as the television station WPIX, which was named after the News’ nickname as “New York’s Picture Newspaper.” In the early 21st century, the Daily News continued to decline in circulation, and was eventually sold for $1 to Tronc.

Amid the massive disruption to journalism wrought by technology, thousands of journalists have been laid off and many newspapers closed, leaving large swaths of the United States without traditional local news sources. The loss of the Daily News in McKeesport, Pennsylvania is a case study of what happens when a major local news source disappears and how citizens struggle to make sense of their communities with only social media to inform them.

Despite the adversity, the community of McKeesport has found ways to stay connected and keep informed about their town, from citizen journalists who pick up the slack to local businesses that offer free press passes in exchange for advertising. Conte argues that local journalism is more important than ever and that the key to saving it may be a return to old-fashioned journalism that relies on the support of the public.

Founded on January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and serves the Yale and greater New Haven communities.
